The first idea of my project is to understanding what the cartoon histories are and meaning in social culture and how to create the good cartoons forms in graphic design works. But when I deeply getting understanding cartoon, I find in china and Taiwan , there is no particularly Chinese style cartoon. 

But what is cartoon? In general speaking, Cartoon is a kind of humorous drawing, pictorial sketch or caricature, by implication humorous or satirical, and usually published in a newspaper, magazine, or periodical. It has mostly been used to describe three specific kinds of drawing. But in Taiwan , Taiwanese Hand Puppet Theater is a popular type of cartoons arts in the Taiwanese spoken societies; Hand Puppet is the breakthrough of Traditional Arts. In the general impression of present time is no more an informal puppet show of historical stories watched by crowds in front of a temple but the TV version Hand Puppet Theater enhanced with sound and special effects.

 

Also, the traditional Chinese cultural, the Chinese typography and traditional water painting are main part of expertise; therefore, I was researching three specific kinds of element, namely Chinese character, tradition painting (Chinese brush) and Chinese puppet (dragon).

The dragon is sometimes viewed in the West as a national emblem of China . However, this usage within both the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan is extremely rare. Firstly, this is because the dragon was the sign of the Emperor, and was on the national flag of the late king dynasty. These monarchist connotations run counter to recent Chinese ideologies. Secondly, the dragon has aggressive, warlike connotations which Chinese governments wish to avoid. It is for the latter reason that the giant panda is far more often used within China as a national emblem than the Chinese dragon. Despite that, the dragon still commands much respect in the Chinese 
culture. It is a taboo to disfigure a depiction of a dragon.

I tried to find that the successful combination of traditional expertise and modern culture initiate a new trend and energy of local arts on cartoons.
