The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition is open to anyone who wants to submit their work. "It's a celebration of diversity", according to Christopher Orr from the Hanging Committee. David Mach's Heirs and Graces is in this year's show.
Damien Hirst's 35ft-tall, 13-and-a-half-ton statue The Virgin Mother is in the Royal Academy's courtyard. It's one of three pieces by the artist to be included in the exhibition and reflects the theme 'From Life'.
The exhibition, now in its 238th year, features major works including a memorial gallery dedicated to Patrick Caulfield, who died in September, and the late sculptor and printmaker Eduardo Paolozzi. Seen here is Caulfield's Happy Hour.
Some 1,300 works have been selected from over 9,000 submissions by established and unknown artists alike. Chantal Joffe's Blond Girl - Black Dress is among those given the nod by the Hanging Committee this year.
The Summer Exhibition's doors will be open to 20 August to let people see paintings such as Leonard McComb's Portrait of Simon, Karen Day, and Family.
